UNISA-JAR Partner Joint Artificial Intelligence Enabled Economy Symposium 2024

UNISA-JAR PARTNER Joint Membrane Science and Technology Symposium
Improving the quality of life through membrane technology applications
26 – 27 August 2025

Membrane filtration is a mature and reliable aqueous/gas media treatment technology and it continues to evolve through high-end research conducted by various world class institutions across the globe. The University of South Africa (UNISA) in partnership with JAR Partner, Tiangong University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Tianjin University and Nanjing Tech University invites outstanding research papers to be presented at their joint two-day symposium on Membrane Science and Technology. The symposium is targeted at early-stage researchers (PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) working on both fundamental research and membrane application. Participation will also include leading research experts and industry practitioners. The symposium will also showcase the various ground-breaking membrane research and innovations at the participating institutions.

The symposium invited more than 40 well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad to participate, aiming to gather experts and research talents in the field of membrane technology around the world, build a high-level academic exchange platform, promote the innovation and application of membrane technology, and promote the transformation of scientific research results. The seminar was opened by Professor Bhekie Mamba, representative of the organizing committee of the 2024 UNISA-JAR Joint Membrane Symposium, academician of the South African Academy of Sciences, Executive Dean of University of South Africa’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Yin Weiguo, deputy director of the Construction and Management Committee of Shaoxing Golden Keqiao Sci-Tech City, and Zhang Jianping, representative of Zhejiang (Shaoxing) Foreign High-level Foreign Experts Innovation Center.

In his speech, Professor Mamba remarked, “This symposium is not only a high-level platform for academic exchange in the global field of membrane science but also an important bridge for promoting industrial upgrading and international scientific and technological cooperation. Over the past few days, we have heard inspiring presentations from world-class experts and learned about the latest breakthroughs and applications of membrane technology in water treatment, gas separation, biomedicine, and other fields. I hope that this symposium will further strengthen international cooperation and accelerate the translation of more scientific research into practical solutions for the benefit of global society.”

At the awards ceremony during the closing session, the 2024 UNISA-JAR Joint Membrane Symposium honored eight experts who made outstanding contributions in the plenary and keynote lectures with certificates of honor. The award-winning experts are: Professor Ma Xiaohua (Tiangong University), Professor Machawe Motsa (UNISA), Professor Hu Yunxia (Tiangong University), Professor Omotayo Arotiba (University of Johannesburg), Professor Liu Gang (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Richard Moutloali (UNISA), Professor Edward Nxumalo (UNISA), and Professor Guo Jing (Harbin Institute of Technology). These awards not only recognize their academic achievements but also inject new momentum into the future development of membrane science and technology.
